Assistant Keeper for Ancient Near East

Grade 8: Salary £36,715 – £43,840 p.a.

The Ancient Near Eastern collections comprise some 18,000 items. The collections cover a range of media, including stone sculpture, pottery, metalwork, stone, faience, glass, and ivory objects, stone tools, and clay tablets and seals.

In addition to the contextual strength of the collections, they are also well-published, making this an important resource for researchers across the world. Original archives related to the collections and archaeologists connected to the Ashmolean are also of specialist interest.

The Assistant Keeper for Ancient Near East will be responsible for the research, display and interpretation of the Ashmolean’s collections from the regions of the Ancient Near East.

This three-year fixed-term post (subject to review) includes a Fellowship at Jesus College, Oxford. The postholder will report to the Keeper of Antiquities.

Suitable candidates will have a postgraduate degree in Ancient Near Eastern studies (including its archaeology), a broad knowledge of the prehistory, history and material culture of Ancient Near East, excellent communication skills and relevant experience of working in a responsible position within a museum.
